This carbs+protein bar contains Ponceau 4R. And thanks to that you may feel hyperactivated. And I’ll let you know if it’s working somewhere at the end of this review. Fingers crossed, as it’s pretty late while I’m writing it and I feel slightly sleepy already.
I thought there’s nothing more surprising than Barebells protein bars containing acesulfame K. But yet, Scitec Nutrition appeared with their CHOCO PRO Mixed Berries White Chocolate flavour bar containing Ponceau 4R in its ingredients. What’s that? It’s a synthetic colourant that may be used as a food colouring. But most important than that is the concern it may cause ADHD-like behaviour in children. However, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), after re-evaluation in 2009 determined that the ‘the available scientific evidence does not substantiate a link between the colour additives and behavioural effects’. Anyway, it is advised to limit its amount to 0.7mg/kg body weight. Well, sounds interesting, isn’t it?
All right, we’ll get back to that later. Let’s get to the point now. This CHOCO PRO mixed berries white chocolate flavour bar smells pretty nice. Both flavours are easily detectable, they’re middling intense, but still inviting. A pretty tough on the outside, this bar turns out to be pleasantly soft on the inside. That means there should be no problem with biting into it. Another advantage of this snack is the fact it’s just slightly chewy and barely sticky. It also has a slightly sandish texture, but it’s up to your preferences. Personally, I don’t mind it; it’s OK for me. And it’s pretty moist, so no issues with eating it. Good.
Not too intense of flavours, but still not too bad.
This carbs+protein bar is pretty nice when it comes to its taste. Slightly sourish mixed berries and sweetish white chocolate flavours are well balanced and easily detectable. Although they’re both not extremely intense, they’re pleasant and enjoyable in their taste. The bar itself is sweet, but definitely not too sweet. Also, there’s no weird aroma or aftertaste. In short, it’s a solidly tasty and sweet bar. And it’s satisfying too.
Do I want another serving of this CHOCO PRO Mixed Berries White Chocolate Flavour protein bar after the first one? I’m not too sure about it. What I’m concerned about is the effect of Ponceau 4R on me. So I’ll stick to one serving of it for now.
All right, let’s get further. This is a pretty good carbs+protein bar when it comes to its macros. It only delivers 213 kcal per 55g bar, 6g of fat, 22g of carbs (including 16.5g of sugar) and 18g of protein. Really nice. The ingredients list, as you already know, contains some unusual ingredients. Along with added sugar, palm oil and corn syrup, there’s also Ponceau 4R (also known by more than 100 synonyms, including E124). What’s the problem with it?
Besides the ones I wrote about at the beginning of this review, I’ve got another problem with it. EFSA’s acceptable daily intake (ADI) of Ponceau 4R is 0.7mg/kg body weight. However, you won’t find any information about the amount of it in this CHOCO PRO Mixed Berries White Chocolate Flavour bar. Is it less than 0.4mg/kg for an average person that weighs 70kg? Or not? Unfortunately, there’s no information on that on the packaging of this bar. And that makes it even more confusing. And it makes me staying away from it.
Not too informational, but pretty tasty CHOCO PRO bar.
Scitec Nutrition Choco PRO Mixed Berries White Chocolate Flavour Carbs+Protein Bar is an interesting snack. It’s supposed to add you some extra energy, but it doesn’t tell you how much exactly. Therefore, although it’s pretty comfortable to eat and tasty, I’d stay away from it. Just in case. And any other things don’t matter here at all. Eventually, a simple table sugar adds some energy too. And it seems to be safer than Ponceau 4R. Hopefully.
Will I ever go back to this CHOCO PRO carbs+protein bar? Not in the near future. In the meantime, I’ll wait for some more information on the content of Ponceau 4R in this bar. And then make a final decision. In the meantime, it goes for a hold.
P.S. Half an hour later and still no effect on using Ponceau 4R in this bar. Does it mean I’m not a kid anymore? Boo.
