Say what? A protein bar from Optimum Nutrition with an overall score of only 5.7/10 pts? What’s going on? I’ll tell you what’s going on: they set the bar really low in this attempt. And they still failed. Well, it’s both embarrassing and disappointing.
Optimum Nutrition chases after the leaders of protein bars market. After Optimum Protein Bars, that turned out to be ‘only’ good to ‘very good’, it’s time for another new thing from them, Protein Crisps Bars. And I have already reviewed one of the flavours from this range, Marshmallow. And, to my great surprise, it wasn’t anything too exciting and surprising. And it looks like it wasn’t a coincidence, as another Optimum Nutrition Protein Crisp Bar, Chocolate Brownie flavour, is even worse than that. This is what a decline
It doesn’t even smell too exciting, as there’s a fragrance of chocolate and whey in this protein bar. No brownie and no fun in it. That’s why it’s not too inviting, but not to repellent either. Anyway, a really tough on the outside, this protein bar is somewhat softish on the inside. But still, some may find it not too comfortable to bite into it, as it’s…. well, not too comfortable indeed. This protein bar is also not too chewy (basically, not at all) and just a slightly sticky. However, its structure seems to be a bit inflated, if you know what I mean. Is it good or is it bad? It’s up to you and your preferences. But I’m not the most enormous fan of such a texture.
Not too flavourish, not well balanced. With a bitterish aroma. Oh dear…
This is not what Optimum Nutrition anything should taste like. That’s what I would say a couple of months ago. In the era when I knew this company from whey protein only. Now I know IT IS possible. Optimum Nutrition went really low when it comes to the taste of this protein bar. Although its nicely and softly crispy, this protein snack is not perfect in its taste. There’s chocolate flavour in it. But there’s not much brownie aroma in it. At least not enough to call it significant. Or tasty. Also, the bar itself is not too sweet, not telling about being a satisfying one. And… yep, there’s also a slightly bitterish touch in it. Therefore, not much pleasure in it. And so low score in this department.
Do I want another serving of this Protein Crisp Bar from Optimum Nutrition after the first one? Not actually. It wasn’t even pleasantly tasty. And that is a good reason to say ‘goodbye, it was nice to meet you’ after the first serving.
Putting all these aspects together, we get a protein bar that is not an excellent one. However, its macros are not that bad. A 65g bar has pretty OK 213 kcal, 6.7g of fat, 16g of carbs (of which only 1.8g of sugar) and a standard 20g of protein. The ingredients list contains palm oil and it’s nothing shocking here. Did someone expect anything much better than that?
I don’t think so. Therefore, Optimum Nutrition shouldn’t expect to get a title of the finest protein bar on the go for this snack from us.
Optimum Nutrition sets the bar. Pretty low.
This Optimum Nutrition Protein Crisp Bar Chocolate Brownie flavour is disappointing. Still. It doesn’t smell exciting, it doesn’t taste spectacular and its ingredients could be better. Its macros are also nothing special after all. And considering it comes from the well-known and high-end brand, I can only say: it’s highly disappointing. Or I should get used to the fact that Optimum Nutrition ‘can’t into protein bars’?
Will I ever go back to this Protein Crisp Bar? I definitely won’t. It’s the worst protein snack from Optimum Nutrition I ever tried. And I guess it’s enough to wrap this review up, isn’t it?
