M&M’s in a protein bar. What could be better? There are a few things I can think of, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t an enjoyable bar. It’s just not as enjoyable as I wanted it to be.
This is the first Detour Lean Muscle protein bar I have reviewed and we’re off to a good start. I was actually so excited at the idea of M&MS in a protein bar, that’s like heaven for me! However, although this protein bar might not be fantastic, it isn’t the worst thing I’ve I’ve eaten and is still enjoyable. Let’s have a closer look at this Detour Lean Muscle Peanut Butter Candy Crunch Protein Bar.
I’d say this protein bar doesn’t smell of anything. I was expecting it to have an overpowering smell of chocolate, especially as it has whole mini M&M’ sM&M’s scattered generously on the top. Instead, I just had a smell of nothingness. The inside and outside of this bar are very similar, literally moulding to your hand at the slightest touch. I do like that aspect, as it also adds a delightful chewiness to the bar.
Flapjack texture with mini M&M’s on top. It’s not quite as impressive as it sounds!
Detour has surely been generous with the M&M’s topping on this protein bar! They are everywhere, not like I’m complaining! The texture of this protein bar is very similar to a buttery, moist flapjack. It might be a thin flapjack, but it’s basically a chewy flapjack with a chocolate bottom and M&M’s covering the top. It sounds delicious, doesn’t it? It almost is so delightful to eat; then this very subtle aftertaste hits you. It might not be there for long, but it still exists and that makes this bar a little less enjoyable. Still, I would go as far as saying this Detour bar is comfortable to eat and the M&M’s topping definitely makes it more enjoyable!
I don’t think I’d be able to eat another Detour protein bar of this flavour after this one. I’d eat another one at another time, perhaps, but not straight away.
I wish their macros were better, but considering the generous helping of M&M’s covering this bar, they’re still not that bad. A slightly smaller than an average protein bar, a 55g Detour bar contains 210kcal, 5g fat, 27g carbs (of which 8g sugars) and only a mere 14g protein. I’d much rather have better macros, but I think they’ve tried to make this more like a sweet treat alternative (where the macros are better than a chocolate bar). Their ingredients speak negatively for themselves seen, as they include palm oil and added sugars. They have tried to redeem themselves by adding natural flavours into the mix, too.
Chewy flapjack texture with added M&M’s. It’s a shame about that very slight aftertaste!
I do think this Detour Lean Muscle Peanut Butter Candy Crunch protein bar would have passed off perfectly as a sweet treat alternative if they’d just removed that very slight aftertaste which comes with it. It’s not too bad, but it’s still there and makes it lose its naughtiness, for that it gets negative marks. I think they have done really well on the texture element of this protein bar, as it resembles a flapjack perfectly! It tastes as buttery and rich as one, too!
Would I eat this Detour protein bar again? I think I would.
