Basic. The name of this protein bar says it all. It’s doesn’t taste good, it’s not comfortable to eat, and it has inferior ingredients. Oh, and its macros could be better too. Oops.
Well, that’s a bit embarrassing. Decathlon has a couple of impressing energy bars in its portfolio under Aptonia brand. However, when it comes to the protein bar, it doesn’t look as good. Its brand used to score overall pretty low in our reviews. And unfortunately, this Decathlon Basic Whey Protein Bar Chocolate is alike. It scored overall really low and there are some reasons for that. Here they are.
The smell. Oh dear. Once you unwrap it, you’ll detect a pretty strong aroma of bitterness. And just a touch of chocolate flavour. That composition is nearly repulsive. Hence, the bar is not inviting at all. It’s not that bad when it comes to its texture – this basic protein bar is softish on the outside, but still somewhat toughish on the inside. That means it could be much more effortless to eat. And much less chewy as well (it’s only a bit sticky, though). These both affect the overall experience, which is somewhat low.
A dramatic experience of the taste.
How to tell it pretty mildly? This basic whey bar from Decathlon is not tasty. At all. Milk chocolate coating is not too flavourish and there’s not much of it. But that’s not the whole story. Much worse than that is the taste of this bar. It’s decently bitter in both taste and aftertaste. And it’s nothing pleasant for sure. The bar itself is just a bit sweet, or rather sweetish. But I wouldn’t say it’s satisfying in any way. Because it’s not.
Do I want another serving of this Decathlon Basic Whey protein bar right after the first one? Not quite much. It has too many flaws, including its poor taste, to want it more than one serving. And I guess some may have a problem with eating the entire serving too.
Macro wise this Decathlon protein bar is not good as well. Although a 60g bar has a somewhat reasonable 231 kcal, only 5.9g of fat and 26g of carbs, it also delivers as much as 17g of sugar. And 19g of protein, which is pretty OK, won’t change my mind these macros are pretty poor. On a par with the ingredients list that contains added sugar, palm oil, glucose syrup and fructose syrup. Oh dear.
Poor bar in many aspects. And it has not many aspects to recommend it.
Decathlon Basic Whey Protein Bar Chocolate is a protein bar that… Oh, wait. It’s hard to say anything good about it. Or maybe let me put it this way (to not to be a cynical guy here): its name tells it all. It’s a basic protein bar. Dramatically basic. And its features reflect it perfectly, unfortunately.
Will I ever go back to this Decathlon Basic Whey protein bar? I will not. Even if I’d get it for free, again.
