A protein bar with a whopping 22g of added sugar? How about ‘no’?
You know, sometimes you don’t need much to say ‘no’. For me, for example, it’s high amount of added sugar in a protein bar. Actually, it’s one of the reasons I say ‘no’ to them. However, in this case, it’s also brown rice syrup. So here we go, two reasons to say ‘no’ in one CLIF Builder’s Protein Bar Chocolate Mint. Or maybe there’s any chance to give it a try? Let’s find it out.
I can’t say anything wrong about the smell of this CLIF’s bar. It’s pretty nice and inviting, although there’s noticeably more of a mint aroma than a chocolate one. Despite that, it’s pretty inviting. A decently tough on the outside, this bar is softish and crumbly on the inside. That means not much trouble with biting into it (but it’s not a top-notch texture for sure). The bar itself is not chewy, but it’s slightly sticky. Also, its moistness is pretty good. Overall, it has a pretty acceptable texture, pretty easy to cope with.
Not the best, but still pretty nice and loveable flavour.
And again, don’t expect a spectacular flavour in this protein bar from CLIF. It’s ‘only’ pretty good. Both flavours are pretty easy noticeable, but there’s much more mint aroma than the chocolate one. Hence, they could be better balanced. It’s not that bad, though. Also, what is not a big surprise with a mint flavour, there’s no weird aroma or aftertaste. When it comes to sweetness, it’s okay – not too bland, not too sweet. And that is the reason it still can be a satisfying protein bar for many. At least when it comes to the taste alone.
Do I want another serving of this CLIF’s bar right after the first one? I even would. If I only didn’t know macros of it…
Did someone say macros? Well, here’s what we’ve got here. A 68g bar has a largish 270 kcal, 9g of fat, a bit too much of 30g of carbs (including a staggering 22g of sugar!) and 20g of protein. Well… The ingredients list contains cane sugar and brown rice syrup.
Not too bad, but that’s still not enough.
Not bad taste and that’s it. That’s what CLIF Builder’s Protein Bar Chocolate Mint is like. Oh, it also has inferior ingredients, including 22g of added sugar. And some vitamins and minerals in trace amount (20-50% of daily values). Is it enough to say ‘see you soon’?
I’m afraid not. Therefore, I will NOT come back to it. 22g of added sugar in a protein bar(!) is nothing worth even a penny.
