If you want to feed your adventure with this energy bar, it may not end up too tasty. Because it lacks many aspects that could make it a real energy booster.
From CLIF’s website: ‘Clif Bar and Company started on a bike ride. Our founder, Gary, took a bite of another energy bar and thought to himself: “I could make a better bar than this.” Today, we still want to make things better.’
Well, as much as this story is so touching (ooh!), there’s a lot of truth in it. Because you not only ‘want to make things better’ (you mean your bars, right?). We would say ‘there’s still much to do in this matter, guys’. At least looking at the other CLIF’s energy bars we reviewed earlier, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, Chocolate Hazelnut Butter or Chocolate Almond Fudge. Is the one we are supposed to review right now, Chocolate Chip flavour, better?
If our adventures were marked with that flavour, they would definitely be bad adventures after all.
Sometimes even we have got a problem with deciding what a specific smell of the entire treat is like. And that’s the situation we’ve got here. As you already know, it promises us to be a Chocolate Chip bar, so we are looking for that aroma in this bar, by instinct. And as dumb it may sound, well… wouldn’t you do the same? But here’s the first surprise – there’s no Chocolate Chip scent here at all. Instead of that, there’s some kind of rolled oats combined with (sunflower?) oil. A not too inviting smell, indeed. Let’s go further.
This energy bar is tough outside, but also pretty softish inside.
You may have some problem with biting into it. But at the same time chewing, eating it should be hassle-free. On top of that, this treat is somehow dryish, so while eating it a sip may come in handy. But hey, maybe the taste of this energy bar is better than its smell?
Well, it’s not. It tastes pretty similar to its smell. So there are somewhat dryish rolled oats in it. And there’s a bit, just a bit of sweetness. But at the same time, there’s a load of bitterness too. What about Chocolate Chips? Well, forget about them here. We mean they are there, but they are bland, tasteless. And it wouldn’t be so bad after all, but… it’s Chocolate Chip bar. Not a bitter rolled oats bar! Oh dear… Do we need to say it won’t make its way as a sweet protein treat?
Do we want another serving of this CLIF BAR Chocolate Chip after the first one? The maker of this protein bar was right. ‘Today, we still want to make things better.’. We don’t know for how long they’ve wanted it, but they’re still not there. So we don’t.
Do macros need some extra work as well? Sort of. 271 kcal per 68g bar is nothing to be proud of. Same as 5.1g of fat won’t bring any fame here. However, 45g of carbs is right on the spot for an energy bar. But as much as 9.2g of protein is not necessary here. So it could be better. And the same we could say about the ingredients list. Brown rice syrup, cane syrup and cane sugar are not the best ingredients indeed. How about a regular, ordinary sugar? Or maybe some honey in it?
Considering all from the above it can’t be the finest energy bar on the go.
Feed your adventure. With something else than this energy bar
It may be even an ordinary
Will we ever go back to this energy bar? We don’t think so. A glass of water with 50g of sugar and lemon juice seems to be a better choice. And tastier. Also cheaper. And easier to prepare. And… and so on. And that’s nothing special when it comes to chocolate chip bars.
