My attitude to these Zero Bars is simply one of ambivalence. As poorly in taste they are, at the same time, I’m always excited when I need to review them. All of that, because I’m wondering how low in taste and overall experience a single protein bar can go. And this one can do pretty low indeed.
It’s not a surprise Zero Bars are one of the worst we’ve ever reviewed at Protein, Fitness and More. Just look at these overall scores here. To say it as mildly as I can, they’re not too high. And that’s OK, really, as… Oh, let me put it this way: they are so poor they seem to be nearly perfect in what they do. And this one seems to say this BioTechUSA Zero Bar Chocolate Mint Flavoured protein bar is poor, really poor. You know why? That’s why.
OK, not everything in this protein bar is so bad. Let’s say, its fragrance. It’s a really nice, deep and flavourish combination of chocolate and mint. Nearly perfect. And if I didn’t know this brand and this range, I would be a couple of steps closer to order the whole box of them. Yet, I know it’s just a facade and the further, the worse. Like here. Like with the texture of this protein bar that is rock hard on the outside and pretty tough on the inside. Do you know what it means? It’s uncomfortable to bite into and only somewhat effortless to eat. It’s also barely chewy, but a bit sticky. On the other hand, it’s moistish. A real combo of indecisiveness.
Chocolate and mint flavour at its (nearly) poorest.
It’s hard to describe the taste of this bar, but let me try to do that. Chocolate flavour? Not here. Mint flavour? It’s here. Anything else? Of course, a lot of bitterness. In other words, it’s a mint-bitterish flavoured bar that seems to be significantly artificial. And as you may guess, it’s nothing pleasant after all. Also, this protein bar is not sweet, not even sweetish. Therefore, the question regarding being a satisfying one doesn’t make any sense here.
How many more serving of this Zero Bar I do want right after the first one? Well, exactly ZERO.
When it comes to macros, these are given, as always, for 100g only. And, as always, they’re decently good. A 50g bar only has 174 kcal, 7.5g of fat, 5.5g of carbs (including only 0.45g of sugar!) and a rounded 20g of protein. And 6g of fibre. Well done! The ingredients list, however, contains palm fat. And it’s nothing good for sure.
The palm oil in the ingredients list means it can’t be the finest protein bar on the go. And it’s not.
(Nearly) Absolute Zero.
This BioTechUSA Zero Bar Chocolate Mint Flavoured Protein Bar is like the other ones from this range. It has excellent macros and… well, not much more than that. It’s uncomfortable to eat, it’s awful in taste and it contains palm oil. Oh, and they would have to pay me a lot of money to encourage me to eat two of them in one sitting. Do you need a better (anti)recommendation?
Will I ever go back to this Zero Bar protein bar? Let me think about it for a moment. Done. So, chances for that are like… Zero.
And it looks like Zero Bars are pretty good at giving you Zero chances, as there’s the same situation with Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Coconut, Double Chocolate and Chocolate Hazelnut flavours from this range too.
