This could be a great option for vegans. Eventually, Barebells has already one great flavour in its lineup. However, if I were vegan, I would get mad at them, as this one is not tasty at all.
Barebells is the brand that tries hard, but there are not much effects of that. Out of ten flavours they made so far, only one was great and luscious, Crunchy Fudge. The rest of them, oh, meh, don’t bother them. Anyway, they have just released two flavours for vegan. One of them, Salty Peanut, we’ve already reviewed. Now, it’s time for another flavour from vegans, Barebells Hazelnut & Nougat Vegan Protein Bar.
If I had to describe the smell of this protein bar, I’d say it’s nearly great! Hazelnuts aroma is strong and easily detectable, while nougat is somewhere there in the background. Still, it’s really inviting, especially if you like hazelnuts. Anyway, the bar has a pretty similar texture to the Salty Peanut flavour. It’s somewhat toughish on the outside, crispy on the inside and a bit chewy and sticky. It’s not a top-notch texture you can get in any given protein bar, but it’s still manageable. The bar also is moist, so there’s not much problem with eating it.
My dear Hazelnut & Nougat flavour, who could ruin you so dramatically?
This is not good. Yes, there’s a pretty nice and pleasant hazelnut flavour in this Barebells protein bar. And just a touch of nougat. But there are two things I can’t believe in: these flavours are not well balanced. And there’s also a bitter aroma going along with them. Why? The latter one is so strong it ruins the taste experience in this protein bar. Even more, it’s even slightly stronger than in the Vegan Salty Peanut flavour bar. Anyway, the bar is only sweetish and not too flavourish (but it could be from the chocolate-late coating). And it leaves you with a bitterish aftertaste in your throat. Hence, it’s not satisfying at all.
Am I fancy another Hazelnut & Nougat Barebells bar right after the first one? Oh, well, how about no?
When it comes to macros, it’s OK-ish. This just-under-the-60g-market-standard 55g bar packs 224kcal, only 15g (27%) of protein and 1g of sugar. Not that terrible. It also doesn’t contain added sugar, palm oil or syrups. And again, no Acesulfame K in it. Nice. Obviously, it’s vegan-friendly.
Nope, this is not good.
It’s hard not to compare this Barebells Hazelnut & Nougat Vegan Protein Bar to the other just launched vegan flavour, Salty Peanut. Personally, both are just fair protein bars. But if I was vegan, I wouldn’t touch neither of them. This Barebells Hazelnut & Nougat Vegan Protein Bar is way too bitter and it could have better macros. And that’s it, that’s enough to say ‘no, thank you’.
Would I buy it again? Nope, I can’t see any reason for that.
